Things to Watch For When Shopping for All-Natural Skincare and Cosmetic Products

Updated: Jul 18, 2019

There's been a clear shift towards natural and organic skincare products over the last few years and the bigger cosmetic companies have picked up on this trend. They have dominated commercial shelf space with skincare products labeled "Natural" and "Organic" - which is absolutely great. Except the words “natural” and “organic” are being used far too liberally. The Marketing departments around the world are very good at what they do and they know exactly how to manipulate us - promote products and keep our eyes away from the other ingredients - the ones tucked away at the back of the product.

Just because a company promotes a natural and/or organic ingredient does not make it a non-toxic product. Many of these products contain other chemical ingredients such as quaternium-15 and other formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Look for names like DMDM hydantoin, BHUT (butylated hydroxytoluene), bronopol, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydrozymethylglycinate, imidazolidinyl urea, and methenamine – just to name a few. All of which can produce some very scary health concerns.

Your skin plays a critical role in your body's overall health, and the ingredients found in your products absorb quickly into your skin and into your bloodstream. It's important to ensure you have the right information when shopping for skincare products. Please take the time and read the label before you purchase anything you apply on your skin.

Another one of my concerns is something you will not necessarily find on the product labels. The amount of animal testing happening in the production of some of the best well-known beauty lines is staggering. According to Cruelty Free International, in 2018 over 115 million animals were being tested worldwide. Companies tell us that animal testing is required to ensure those ingredients and products are safe enough for humans. And while I’m all for making products safe for humans, there are alternatives. Switching to cruelty-free and buying true natural and organic products is one of the easiest and best ways to say no this type of testing.

There will always be some folks that believe natural products do not help the skin as well as their traditional options (the ones loaded with chemicals). Fortunately, more and more Canadians and Americans are benefiting from using natural and organic skincare products.
